Traditional Lion Dance

lion dance north

lion dance south

During the Chinese New Year 2009 celebration, we saw an increase in the invitations for Chinese Associations to display their Lion Dance Troupes’ prowess at homes, business premises, and offices – more so for the superstitious good luck for the year to come. Inside the lion dance costume will be two persons following a certain fixed pattern of movements largely governed by the legs and hands. The normal music that provides the timing for the dance would be the large floor drum, the two cymbals and a metal gong.

There are basically two types of Lions used, the Northern and the Southern type. The Northern Lion Dance is more for showmanship with the use of aids such as balls etc., while the 'Southern Lion Dance requires some measure of kung fu skills.

The Lion comprises of a head and a body. The head is made from rice paper and decorative ornaments and held together by bamboo stripes. The best lion heads are the lightest and most decorative. The body, on the other hand, is made from silk cloth and other bells and whistles that are sewn onto the material. You can read more about the intricacies of the symbolic details of the Lion Dance. It is not the intention of this article to venture researching into the details.

During my younger days, I was involved in Chinese Kung Fu (Hung Gar Fist Kung Fu), which is a branch of kung fu originating from south China. As part of our training we were to be involved in performing the Lion Dance during auspicious occasions and also for competitions in attempts to win the pride for the association. The lion dance was central to the association’s indoor and outdoor activities and only the very skilled could be the one bearing the head of the Lion. The trainee was often the body bearer who is responsible to flap the cloth signifying the life of the lion.

Once I was in the skilled circle (inner group) who could man-handle the lion’s head, I was brought to a deeper knowledge about this Traditional Lion Dance. Do you know that historically the Lion Dance was used by ancient Buddhist adherents to exorcise demons out of people? The lion was worshipped as a symbol of power, strength, and wisdom and was able to chase away evil spirits. How could a Lion prancing about be used to chase out demons? What gave the practitioners the confidence that Lion Dance performances have spiritual powers for exorcism works?

This goes back to the initiation of the Lion Head. After the head is constructed by the skilled artisans, the head is not to be used immediately by the new owner. There is a ceremony called the ‘initiation ceremony’ that needs to be performed by the temple priests. It is at this ceremony that the spiritual input and demonic powers are at play. The Lion Head would be presented by prayers at the altar of the gods at the temple and subsequently one of the priests would go into a trance under the possession of one of the gods (a familiar spirit). The priest would then take hold of a big Chinese pen, dip it in black ink and begin to draw a ‘third eye’ on top of the head of the lion. This third eye would then be the entrance where the spirit would enter into the lion’s head every time the dance is performed in the future. After having ‘opened’ the third eye, the priest still under trance would be the first to perform the lion dance even though the priest had never learned any kung fu or trained in the dance routine! There may be some slight variations of the whole procedure if the adherents are from different Chinese clans.

How did I know all these? Because I was deeply involved in the whole initiation ceremony. These are some of the inner secrets which are seldom revealed to the naive observer. For that reason, I would usually stay away from participating or even observing such dance performances. The spiritual implication is very great. Bystanders and innocent observers do not know about the background of this dance.

To a Christian who wants to live victoriously, one should ask the question of whether he or she should draw pleasure from watching such shows? Why do you need to see others under the possession of familiar spirits? Why engage and avail yourself as open doors for the spirits to manifest? Are we to fellowship with those under the spirit’s possession? This cultural practice will no doubt be exported to those who are fascinated, but if you know the significance, would you too be engrossed?

  2. Hi Tony,
    Thanks for the comments.

I am not against Christians learning the art of self-defense. In this evil world that we live in, it is good that Christians also use their God-given intelligence to pick up some self-defense skills, so that in the event of unforeseen circumstances, one is able to protect themselves or their love ones. Just as we need to pray and act on our prayers, we need to engage the educated mind to take care of ourselves.

I had a deep experience in Chinese Wushu when I was young, and my name was actually engraved in the temples to be the next generation to carry forth the art. (Thank God, I renounced all that already). So I do have knowledge of the spiritual implications of some types of Chinese Wushu, and because of that, I will not advise Christians to carelessly engage in any kind of self-defence, but rather to examine the source of that art. Who started those art of self-defence? What was the motive of the art? Was there any spiritual input to develop the art? Were spirits from the other world invoked during the practice of the art?

Some may not see it from my perspective, and that is fine with me. But because of my background involvement in this art, I have a different view.

    God bless you, Tony.

  5. Thanks for the eye-opening write-up on the lion dance. I have since found several sites on the Net that carry articles about the eye-dotting ritual that points to the opening of the third eye and the lion coming to life. Especially noteworthy is a detailed explanation about this ceremony at this link: http://www.shaolinway.com/shaolinway/shaolin-lion.htm

  6. Dear Steven,
Thank you for the info abt lion dance and the meaning of it. I used to thihk that it is just some artistic performance but I realised that after reading abt it here, the lion dance has a deep spiritual implications that many christians are not aware of.

Just this past CNY, I went to church for service and noticed a lion head was place at the side of the pulpit, and there were also lanterns and some chinese calligraphy as decorations for this season. I didn't think otherwise abt the lion head there. Later that week on chap goh meh, my children wanted to watch the lion dance. As christian parents we did not think it is a good idea for them and more so, why would they want to go to watch the lion dance. So, I seek out for answer from your website and with this info, we know wisdom has to some in.
    My question is:
Since the lion dance has such spiritual implications, why is it being used as decorations at the church side pulpit??

Why is the pastor ignorant on this matter? It is a chinese church.

Should I bring this up to the pastor?

    Thank you.

  7. It all depends on your faith.
If your faith is strong you can move mountains. this is what the bible said. If your faith is low, stay out till you have revelations to things to come. Its fine now worries, God's grace is for everyone.

    One Question.
Does God love the people who lion or dragon dance? Jesus comes for the sick and the poor, Not for the healthy.

Yes Jesus wants this special group of people into the house of God. He wants to save and not condemn.
He wants the temple mediums, all that you do not wish to be associated to be in Heaven one day. To come to Him one day. Yes there are already many testimonies that temple mediums and drug addicts got saved and is now building God's house and expanding to save more related people. Go check it out.
these people who got saved are opening christian books store chains and restaurants. Most of the workers are previous addicts but now they are born again. Doing awesome stuff for Christ now. These people will be the most content and appreciative when they are in heaven.

"Only those who know they are forgiven much will love Him much." feel free to correct me if you think this statement i shared is wrong.

Which is why tax collectors, sinners, prostitutes are mention much in the bible.

The time has come. Next time you see a lion dance group. Bless them, they need your love too. Go forth and transform them if your faith is large and has a special touch for them.

i am not surprise if we see lion and dragon dance or even Chinese opera in heaven. Perform to show appreciation to God Most High. A grand celebrations and feast is on when God comes back. I think very very soon.

    God Love All
    Hosanna Highest!

ps: Bro thank you for this blog. it has a good purpose. All good.

  8. This is a program which i thoght of. It is a radical idea and churches may not be open to it but it is an interesting approach to reach out to Chinese lion dance community. First time sharing it in print.

During Chinese New Year, actually Churches could engage lion dance teams to do an opening and closing performance for church CNY celebrations. In the middle of the celebration, of course there will be a powerful message of our Lord Jesus Love and Salvation. John 3 : 16 is being preached. Lion dance performers are invited to sit in during the sermons, there is no other place to go as they have a closing ceremony to perform later. Be generous to them and i believe this is a great time to communicate and shed light to these precious lost sheep. When the Good News is being preached. Seeds are sown and their will be fruits and results!

There are many lion dance teams in Malaysia and around the world. They need a reach out hand. They will be saved!

There are 2 popular Chinese Celebrations each year, CNY and Mid Autumn. Normally Churches will hold special celebration services for these 2 event.

May this special group of youths and people get saved. And be Lion of Judah for Christ. They will be transformed!

  10. I am sure you know that Christmas has a pagan origin. Christians changed this festival to one with Christian meaning. We all have pagan origin, but we are redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Can't the pagan lion be cleansed and used for Christian celebration? Is our God so small that He can't even overpower the whatever spirit on the lion's head?

In fact, the teaching of whatever Chinese is evil is from some pre-World War II white missionaries (some not all) who wants to convert us to the Western culture in addition to Christianity. The respectable ones like Hudson Taylor would not condemn lion dance, but encourage the use of it as a tool to glorify God.

But, because there are immature Christians around us, we have to be careful. Paul said, "I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 If your brother or sister is being injured by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let your good be spoken of as evil.
    (Ro 14:14-16)

You are supposed only to be lovingly sensitive to the weaker Christians, but not to believe in their superstition.

    Just my two cents!

  11. Why not ask ourselves: "Is it honouring God?
    Does it bring Him glory?"
Each of us may have different opinion, but
it is HIS Word that counts after all, isn't it?
